This series of Munsell-savvy greys is a palette staple. This paint has been balanced to be perfectly neutral at a precise level of lightness or darkness— in the case of Williamsburg N2 the paint is balanced to be a lightness of Munsell 2. On a ten or eleven step value scale this would be at a two with the lower numbers being darker. This color set alongside other deep colors on the palette can reveal their true undertones. More than once we have been surprised by what the neutrality of N2 can reveal about the leanings of other colors. This paint is also helpful in establishing the key for the low tones of a painting. This color is incredibly helpful for creating the elusive scale of tones from value 2 to the even darker value 1 (black). Having a benchmark can help evaluate levels depth for various black and umber paints. The N2 grey is dark (Munsell 2 is very low) and approximates the deepest shadows in an outdoor scene on a sunlit day. While we wouldn’t exactly say it doesn’t affect the hue of other colors when mixed to lower their chroma, we would say this is a phenomenal paint blend, perfectly neutral out of the tube, and best of all— a perfect match for Munsell N2.
“Four Neutral Grays (N2, N4, N6, and N8), ground in alkali-refined linseed oil and using a combination of Titanium White, Lamp Black, and small touches of various iron oxides (Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna) to pull the otherwise too-cool mixtures back towards neutral. The Williamsburg Grays match the Munsell values nearly flawlessly across the spectrum.”
