A truly neutral grey in their series of pure neutral greys, this is a fantastic paint, at a perfectly calibrated lightness level known as Munsell N6. You don’t need to understand Munsell to use this paint— on a ten or eleven step lightness scale where black paint is set at 1, this grey would be the 6 on the scale. Something about this color wants us to say things like “reminiscent of the clouds after rain in springtime.” Ok that’s a bit flowery. However, this series of greys is so good that it makes us wax poetic (and all this over a grey!). Especially in the lighter values, we wouldn’t exactly say it doesn’t affect the hue of other colors when mixed to lower their chroma. However it is absolutely fantastic for being an actual neutral grey out of the tube at value 6. At the time of this writing, Williamsburg is the only company we know of who offers Munsell calibrated paints at an affordable price point. Williamsburg has exceeded expectations by giving artists a high quality, precision-calibrated perfect Munsell value N6. We have done the work to mix these neutrals ourselves at times, and this mix is a huge time-saver. This color, along with the other Munsell Greys by Williamsburg, is among the convenience mixtures for which we are the most thankful. As an interesting piece of history, this color came out of a community of sophisticated painters of realism, and some of the most talented painters in the world today use this color as part of their painting practice.
“Four Neutral Grays (N2, N4, N6, and N8), ground in alkali-refined linseed oil and using a combination of Titanium White, Lamp Black, and small touches of various iron oxides (Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna) to pull the otherwise too-cool mixtures back towards neutral. The Williamsburg Grays match the Munsell values nearly flawlessly across the spectrum.”
