Titanium White
The alkyd resin binder lets FastMatte colors dry quickly but thoroughly, allowing multiple layers to be built up without disturbing previous ones. The colors are loaded with pigment for excellent coverage, while the Semi-Transparent nature of many of the pigments still allows for glazing and multi-tonal techniques. It is the matte surface, however, that makes Gamblin FastMatte colors so revolutionary: when used as an underpainting layer, the matte surface of the alkyd colors provides a mild tooth similar to that of ground, ensuring the proper adhesion of further oil layers when following the fat over lean rule.”-Jerrys Artarama site on Gamblin. This color was made to be able to dry in about 24 hours (the Fast Dry White by Gamblin will dry a bit faster than Titanium White, whereas the Fsat Matte Titanium White dries even faster). Gamblin describes this color as having a unique texture vis-a-vis their other white paints. “Out of the tube, Fast Matte Titanium White will feel grittier and a little denser than our traditional Titanium White. The stiff and grittier texture allows for more broken mark making and defined brushwork – qualities prized by plein air painters..” It could be a little confusing so just for clarity, this is a different paint than Gamblin’s Quick Dry or Fast Dry white. The Fast Matte White contains alkyd resin combined with linseed oil. It would be worthwhile to explore how or if alkyd works in your painting practice.
