Yellow Ochre
This is a fascinating color which has special uses, as it has somewhat larger particles than most paints. The Munsell chroma listed is low, however the chroma expands when used in transparency. The color in tints with titanium white puts it into a similar hue space as Natural Pigments interesting yellow ocher pale or Winsor and Newton’s yellow ocher, as both tints have a coolness in the yellow that leans ashen or green in tints unlike other more orangy earth tones. However Williamsburg’s Stil de Grain is totally different than either of these. This mysterious paint goes much deeper in value than either of those two, and and displays more chroma throughout its tints. Also its texture and consistency differ notably from other paints in the same hue region. An intriguing color, Stil De Grain makes one want to come up with new painting techniques just to explore its full potential.
This color is part of their Signature Color series: “Throughout Williamsburg's history, exploration and experimentation have led to the development of several unique colors. The Signature Colors set contains 8 colors representative of these discoveries.”
