Brown Iron Oxide
Williamsburg’s Italian Burnt Sienna is an interesting paint which shows qualities one would associate more with natural earths with large particle sizes. In masstone this is fairly similar to Williamsburg’s Burnt Sienna. In contrast Williamsburg’s regular Burnt Sienna is slightly higher in chroma and a much stronger tinter. The texture of the Italian Burnt Sienna is visible out of the tube, and the differences here will be prized by certain connoisseurs of earth tones. The Italian Burnt Sienna is gorgeous when painted thinly and reminds us of the some of the very best earth tones. Williamsburg’s Italian Burnt Sienna is a gentle tinter when mixed with Titanium White. When spread thinly there is a gemlike glow. These paints are a bit redder and deeper in value than 2.5YR 3/6.
“One of the crown jewels of the Williamsburg line, these colors completely redefine the experience of earth colors, which are typically seen as drab and unexciting. These particular pigments are rare and come from the same mining regions in Italy made famous by the great Sienese and Florentine masters. Prized for their authenticity, they have been used by many conservators and restorers and sought after by both traditional painters looking to connect to the traditions of the past, as well as contemporary painters looking for a more expressive, physical presence in their palette. We take great care not to over-mill these, instead allowing the presence of the pigment to be felt and preserving the larger crystalline facets of the minerals, which ultimately allows for a stunning interplay of rich masstones playing off brilliant undertones.” -Williamsburg Catalog
