Brown Iron Oxide
Michael Harding Raw Sienna is a notably cool-toned brown ochre color with a bit of graininess. Whereas many brands label Raw Sienna as a middle-brown that has a decidedly orange note this one leans more brown. Where Vasari’s Raw Sienna, Old Holland’s Raw Sienna Light, and Old Holland’s Raw Sienna Deep all have warmth in tints, Michael Harding’s Raw Sienna belongs to the group of Raw Siennas which are comparatively more neutral. Michael Harding Raw Sienna is more of a brown ochre which zigs where others zag in regard to other Raw Siennas. Michael Harding’s Raw Sienna is cool in tints, and darker in masstone. While all browns are a subset of orange, this one does not show the warm putty or even peanut butter tones that other brands exhibit. The closest paint we’ve tested is the specialty color Williamsburg French Raw Sienna which is also deep in value/lightness and has a bit more warmth to it than the Michael Harding.
