Cadmium Red

This lively red has medium-high tinting strength and extra smooth featherlight handling. With an almost lacquer-like finish under the palette knife when wet, it dried slightly more matte than similar colors. Comparable colors include Gamblin’s Cadmium Red Medium, which is stiffer, and Williamsburg’s Cadmium Red Medium. There are also two slightly darker colors, RGH Cadmium Red Medium and Old Holland’s Cadmium Red Middle (Vermillioned), which is darker and more highly pigmented. The Winsor and Newton Cadmium Red is an oranger red than their Cadmium Red Deep and is close to 7.5R in hue. The texture is loose and flowing—the paint itself is lighter in weight than some of the other comparable colors. It does well in tints with white, though it is not as highly pigmented as brands such as Old Holland.
