Quinacridone Violet / Rose (this pigment can be violet or magenta)
Williamsburg’s Quinacridone Violet is an exceptionally powerful, vibrant violet variety of PV19. With the added benefit of exceptional tinting strength, this dynamic color has a hue in glaze which is similarly to Blockx’s PV19 violet (which is actually named Magenta, even though it appears to be the more violet variety of PV19). The tints of this Williamsburg Quinacridone Violet are a bit warmer and different in character than tints of PV19 Violet made with other brands, though it is at home among brands. Along with Blockx Magenta (which is a red-leaning violet), Williamsburg’s Quinacridone Violet is one of the PV19 violets that have a red undertone. A similar paint is M Graham’s Quinacridone Violet. Of the brands we’ve tested so far with the same pigment, the Williamsburg had the highest tinting strength.
In 2023, Golden published a vital series of tests on their colors and how they performed in mixes with various white paints. More information can be found at https://justpaint.org/astm-lightfastness-testing-for-oil-paints/.
