Slate Black
Williamsburg has several slate greys including Davy’s Grey Deep and French Ardoise Grey. To contrast these two, they published the following description in Just Paint: “In comparing French Ardoise Grey to [Davy’s Grey Deep, which has the same pigment designation] …the French [Ardoise] variety is much lighter, much more Transparent and has a satiny sheen which is unique next to the very matte quality of Davy’s Grey Deep. Both the French Ardoise Grey and Davy’s Grey are warm grays and offer unique properties useful in glazing and also offer a smooth quality that is difficult to achieve when diluting black pigments to similar transparency.” -Just Paint 2012
This interesting pigment, PBk19, had not been assigned a rating by the ASTM. In 2015, Golden assigned an estimated ASTM Equivalent of ASTM I for this color. While this pigment was not specifically mentioned, in 2023, Golden published a vital series of tests on their colors and how they performed in mixes with various white paints.
