Anthriquinone Red
Pigment Brown 23
Anthradquinone Scarlet
Also called Kraplak Rose Antique Extra, this color is a very convincing substitute for genuine Rose Madder. This pigment blend does not appear to have the highest lightfastness (PR168 may get a II), however it might be more lightfastness than genuine Rose Madder. We once had a vintage tube of genuine Rose Madder by Winsor and Newton, and the paint had a sort of semi-translucency to it. When testing a batch of Old Holland paints containing PR168, without knowing the name for this one we were struck by the similarity to the authentic Rose Madder. Only later did we realize this was intended to be its approximation. We are not sure how long this paint will be available in its current formulation as the manufacturer of PR168 announced that it will no longer produce this pigment. This is a deep cherry red which makes chromatic tints. It is not an exceptionally strong tinter. Overall it makes a lovely rose pastel when tinted with Titanium White. When mixed with Yellow Ochre this makes interesting fleshtones. It was very interesting in concert with the other reds made by Old Holland that contain PR168: Madder Geranium Light Extra, Ruby Lake, Old Holland Bright Red, and Scarlet Lake Extra. These would make a great array of warm notes in figure painting when mixed with Yellow Ochre, however there is a bit of a compromise in lightfastness. In contrast to Kraplak Geranium Licht Extra (aka Madder Geranium Lake Light Extra), this is a very similar paint. This color is a bit lighter, more transparent, and has a bit more of that translucency we’d associate with genuine Rose Madder, while the Madder Geranium Lake is a bit more intense.
A beautiful middle red-magenta which is a bit deeper than Brilliant Pink and more Transparent. There is a touch of desaturation in it (note the PBr23).
