Anthriquinone Red
Anthradquinone Scarlet
Pigment Brown 23
This color is something like Genuine Rose Madder, and has an intensity to it. Also known as Kraplak (Geranium Licht Extra, this paint is a more intense version of Old Holland’s Rose Dore Antique Extra (known by the name Kraplak Rose Antique Extra). The Rose Dore Madder is a bit lighter, though the hue is very similar. One of the differences between the two is that the Rose Dore Madder Extra has that translucent quality we would associate with vintage genuine rose madder which Rose Dore Extra seeks to imitate, while the Madder Geranium Lake Light Extra is a bit more intense and has less of that almost milky translucency. The differences emerge in tints as the Madder Geranium Lake Light Extra is a stronger tinter which makes deeper and cooler tints with Titanium White. Both colors contain PBr23, which give them that slight desaturation which we associate with so many colors of petals, though both are quite chromatic despite this addition. Looking at masstone alone one would be hard pressed to detect the PBr23 as these are very bright high saturation crimsons. In tints one can see the natural quality this imparts though. Both make lovely notes of warmth in flesh tones when mixed with PY43 Yellow Ochre. There is a sacrifice in lightfastness though. These contain PR168, which while beautiful is about a LFII. It is likely to be more lightfast than Alizarin though. We are not sure how long these paints in their current formulation will be available as PR168, one of the ingredients, was recently discontinued. Overall this is a punchy high-chroma crimson— a deep red with a note of coolness which produces cool pink tints and has a depth which recommends itself for realistic painting.
This color comes in both Deep and Light and each formulation has different pigments. This color, the Light variety, does not contain PR 83.
