Napes Yellow / Genuine Naples Yellow (Lead)
Please note that this paint is toxic. (Please contact the manufacturer for more information). This color is different from Michael Harding Naples Yellow Light, which is a (toxic) bright middle yellow, as well as different from their normal Naples Yellow, which is a PBr24. This color, the genuine or toxic kind, PY41, is actually a fairly light color though it is definitely darker than the Naples Yellow Light PY41. This color reminds us of a yellow ochre if the ochre could get lighter and brighter. There is quite a difference in hue between Michael Harding’s Genuine Naples Yellow Dark and Michael Harding Genuine Naples Yellow Light. The Light version is like a fairly bright middle yellow while the dark is like a lighter chromatic yellow ochre or lemon ochre (which is a sort of a dull marigold or yellow-orange). There is not a perfect Munsell Atlas chip match, however it is somewhere near 10YR 7/8 or maybe a bit more chromatic at 7/8. In hue the color seems a little yellower, or at least has a yellow undertone. The consistency is very smooth. Please educate yourself on the risks as well as the proper handling and safety measures needed with this color. We can’t point out the toxicity of every artist pigment (as there are many, and we are artists, not toxicologists) so please make sure to look into the MSDS for every paint you use. Please contact the manufacturer for the MSDS, safety, handling, materials and composition, etc. We also recommend supplementing this with doing one’s own research on artist paints.
