Napes Yellow / Genuine Naples Yellow (Lead)
Please note that this paint is toxic —more on this below. There is a big difference in color between this paint, which is a yellow lead-based Naples Yellow, and the Michael Harding Genuine Naples Yellow Dark, which is a browner lead-based Naples Yellow (both are toxic). There is also a big difference between this paint and any of the Naples Yellow hues made by most other brands, which tend to be a light peach or light yellow orange with a lot of white in the color. Michael Harding Genuine Naples Yellow Light is a warm, bright middle yellow. In Munsell terms, the closest match in our older color atlas was the 5Y 8/10 chip for the dried paint, though it could be between 8/10 and 8.5/10. By contrast, the deep variety skips a whole Munsell page and is somewhere near the 10YR page. The color of the Genuine Naples Yellow Light is fairly high saturation, almost like a cadmium yellow mixed with a bit of white. So that was a bit of a surprise, as Genuine Naples Yellow Dark is more of a lemon ochre color— a kind of light, chromatic brown like a smooth chromatic earth or a dull marigold color. Both of these genuine Naples Yellows PY41 are different from Michael Harding (regular) Naples Yellow, which is a PBr24. Please educate yourself on the risks as well as the proper handling and safety measures needed with this color. We can’t point out the toxicity of every artist pigment (as there are many, and we are artists, not toxicologists) so please make sure to look into the MSDS for every paint you use. Please contact the manufacturer for the MSDS, safety, handling, materials and composition, etc. We also recommend supplementing this with doing one’s own research on artist paints.
