Pyrrole Scarlet
Winsor and Newton's Scarlet Lake is a fantastic color that we wish were available in 150ml tubes. This color fills an important niche in the color space when it comes to tints. A brilliant red, this pigment is a touch oranger than Pyrrole Red PR254, though both would be considered red in masstone. In tints it really shines and creates high chroma reds with a slightly different hue than PR254. For connoisseurs of pinks this is a helpful pigment. It is popular in pigment blends, however it is important to have it as a stand-alone pigment for greater control when mixing with other colors. A very enjoyable color, this paint even has (as of our 2021 tests) a nearly imperceptible pearlescence that shows itself ever so subtly when used in large quantities.
Please note that this is a case where Winton cannot be substituted for their Artists’ Oils line as the formulations differ despite having similar names. The Winton paint with the same name has a different pigment entirely which could cause some confusion. Within the brand Winsor and Newton, only the Artists’ Oil Paint line has PR255.
