Ultramarine Violet
We love this slightly off-the-beaten path pigment. A rather bright violet, this pigment is fantastic on it own or in mixtures. As a stand-alone color, this paint fills in the rosy violet side of the spectrum where there are not many single pigments from which to choose. This color is gorgeous on its own, however we love it for utilitarian reasons as well. Williamsburg’s Ultramarine Pink is fantastic for the way it tones down green blends. Green blends are infamously difficult, and this pigment exerts a pleasant toning effect for mixes descending in value and saturation. For use as a stand-alone color, when we want to preserve its bright violet tones, we prefer to take on the tradeoff for less paint film strength and opt for Williamsburg’s safflower oil version of Ultramarine Pink, as it may yellow a bit less. Overall this is an exceptional color and a really fun paint. And no they are not paying us to say this. Update: Unfortunately the pink/red version of PV15 has been discontinued.
In 2023, Golden published a vital series of tests on their colors and how they performed in mixes with various white paints. More information can be found at https://justpaint.org/astm-lightfastness-testing-for-oil-paints/.
