Pyrrole Red
Williamsburg Pyrrole Red is an extremely high chroma brilliant red. Williamsburg’s variety is a solid choice for a PR254. Noticeably cooler (more toward red than orange) than PR255, this Pyrrole Red PR254 tends toward a cool pink in mixes. In masstone this paint makes a good primary or psychological red. Williamsburg lists the hue around 8.25R. As a quirky aside, when working with a large quantity of this paint, we have noticed that it has an aroma akin to cookie dough with almond extract, a lovely touch to a beautiful color. Overall Williamsburg has a bit of a stiffer consistency than some other brands which carry paint made with this pigment.
This color is part of their Modern Colors series: “Crisp and bright, with the ability to produce strong and clean tints. Modern colors are an excellent choice for painters looking to supplement their traditional colors with higher chroma alternatives and contemporary painters looking to explore a modern palette.” It is also part of their Basic Color series, recommended as, “A great set for someone just starting to paint in oils or as an introduction to our line of paints.” In 2023, Golden published a vital series of tests on their colors and how they performed in mixes with various white paints.
