Cadmium Red
Williamsburg's Cadmium Red Medium is a balanced warm red that sits between cadmium red mediums and a cadmium red light. The Williamsburg Cadmium Red Medium is unique in hue— sitting just a bit deeper and also warmer than Old Holland’s Cadmium Red Light. The hue of the Williamsburg is a red that is oranger/warmer than many cadmium red mediums, and yet it is deeper and redder than many cadmium red lights. This paint is flowing, though with more body than M Graham’s cadmium red. The hue is not identical to any of the other brands we’ve tried, so it is worth adding if you are looking for cadmiums that bring special notes of high chroma to this area of the spectrum. In value it is a bit deep, and yet it is warm, so that makes an interesting combination. The hue is also unique in the tints it creates. Cooler (redder) cadmium red mediums would be Vasari, Michael Harding (which is also a bit higher in lightness) and Old Holland’s Cadmium Red Medium (Vermillioned). Williamsburg’s Cadmium Red Medium is a strong tinter, brings a bold presence, and has a pleasant feel under a palette knife.
This color is part of Williamsburg’s Traditional Color series: “An ideal starting place for artists who are interested in exploring a more traditional range of colors.” In 2023, Golden published a vital series of tests on their colors and how they performed in mixes with various white paints.
