Cadmium Yellow Medium and Deep
Vasari's Cadmium Yellow Deep is a dashing yellow-orange with an extremely flowing consistency. In hue it’s still debatably in realm of golden yellows though it nearly yellow-orange. It’s a touch closer to orange than what is called cadmium yellow deep by most brands. In Munsell terms the hue of Vasari Cadmium Yellow Deep hovers around 6.25 YR. This is a nice transition hue from the yellow-orange territory of the Extra Deeps and the rest of the Cadmium Yellow Deeps in other brands. To compare this with other paints you may have, it’s between Williamsburg’s Cadmium Yellow Extra Deep on the oranger end and Old Holland’s Cadmium Yellow Deep on the yellow end. This paint has admirable tinting strength. Some other advantages to this paint are that it is flowing. For being this fluid-like, its tinting strength held pretty strong (not as strong as old Holland but comparable to other premium brands. This paint has incredible glide, so if you want a color that doesn’t even really need medium to work with this would be a great one. The drawbacks are that it would not be good for impasto—this paint does not have much heft and may require a little incorporation with the palette knife out of the tube. In fact it is capable of dripping off of the palette knife, which may make it suited to thinner applications. Other paints in this color range are Michael Harding’s Cadmium Yellow Deep and perhaps even Schmincke Norma’s Cadmium Yellow Deep. Overall this is one of our favorite Vasari yellows.
