Cadmium Red
Old Holland’s Cadmium Red Deep is extremely highly pigmented—we could tell it was Old Holland as soon as we mixed it with white because the tinting strength was so powerful. The hue is a bit deeper value in masstone than some of the other Cadmium Red Deeps in other brands, however the difference is very slight. A similar color which does not have as much depth would be Schmincke Norma Cadmium Red Deep. Both show a touch of duskiness in tints which we would associate with cadmium red deeps on the whole. This color really holds its own in tints. The handling is characteristic “Old Holland Stiff” which begins to flow when working with it. While it is an impasto color, it is more workable than something like the Gamblin Cadmium Red Deep. This is a deep and robust color.
