This is a deep cherry-colored cadmium red with a special hue. The masstone is similar to Schmincke Norma’s Cadmium Red Deep, however some differences emerge in tints. Michael Harding’s Cadmium Red Deep retains a red in tints. Other brands have deeper “deeps” with a shadowy duskyness in the cool tints. Unlike other cadmium red deeps, the Michael Harding version is a bit livelier and retains its redness in tints (it does not go dusky). In tints it leans a bit more toward the behavior of a Cadmium Red Medium, though it is between what other brands might call a medium and a deep. The tints of the Michael Harding Cadmium Red Deep are similar to tints of Vasari’s Cadmium Red Medium. The Vasari has a slightly different masstone and of course different handling. This buttery paint is a strong tinter (slightly stronger than Vasari in tinting power). Its hue fills a needed in-between step in the progression of cadmium reds.
