Mini-Guide to Pyrrole Reds
These gorgeous reds make smashing tints and are blazingly chromatic in masstone.
Our Pyrrole Red journey started with Pyrrole Red classic, PR254. These bright cherry reds tend to center around a middle red, but Williamsburg's Pyrrole Red is particularly cool. More about Pyrrole Reds in-depth, here.
Next, we realized that Pyrrole Scarlet, PR255, was incredible for peachy-pink tints. More about Pyrrole Scarlet paints in general, here. The particular Pyrrole Scarlet is shown Winsor and Newton's Scarlet Lake.
Then, when we were working closely with some Vasari colors, we realized that their Permanent Bright Red is actually a PR254 that looks like a PR255! We actually wrote to Vasari to inquire as the two looked so similar, and they confirmed that this was indeed PR254. It's just a tiny bit cooler than PR255. Vasari actually offers two kinds of PR254, the warmer version shown here is Permanent Bright Red, and the other (not shown) is called Basic Red.
Enjoy, and Happy Painting!
