Arylide Yellow 5GX, Hansa Yellow 5GX, PY74 2GX-70

PY74LF

Alternate Name

Hansa Brilliant Yellow

Pigment Description

We have added this distinction in our pigment notebook of PY74 LF because the extra letters find their way onto paint tubes. This is a pigment with two forms. There are stabilized types and un-stabilized (transparent) types, which seem to vary in opacity, hue, and lightfastness. This article briefly describes both types. The more weatherfast type is described as more opaque, weaker, and redder than the transparent type. The convention of adding LF is not in the colour index, however the distinction may account for the two formulations of the pigment. From artiscreation: "transparency depends on formulation. Comes in both opaque and transparent versions. It appears that the light fastness is better in opaque formulations." Like several other hansas, this color may metabolize to a potential carcinogen and could cause methemoglobinemia, see Monona Rossol's writing for more.

Stats

Lightfastness

Varies considerably

This pigment may vary from acceptably lightfast to poor lightfastness. It’s probably advisable to do your own lightfastness testing. Several types or sub-varieties show up (such as 5GX or 2GX-70). These are often not designated on the paint tube, and they may have different lightfastness.

Transparency

Varies, Semi-Transparent

May range from Semi-Opaque to Transparent depending on how the paint is formulated

Toxicity

Previously thought to be in the category of Low Concern, new research suggests this may metabolize to be a potential carcinogen and also cause a serious health condition.

See Monona Rossol's research available upon request here for more information. Treat all pigments and paints with studio safety protocols.
