Solaplex Yellow

PY216

Alternate Name

Titanium Zinc Antimony Stannate

Pigment Description

A somewhat rare and interesting warm yellow or marigold color with a note of pastel. This is found in a couple of oils and watercolors, and is sometimes marketed as a chrome yellow replacement color. In masstone the color is a pale, warm, orangey-yellow with just a note of desaturation, and is fairly opaque. However it watercolor the pigment opens up with more semi-opacity than expected (at least in the Schmincke version) and the color turns more toward yellow in thinner washes. Schmincke gives their version in watercolor four out of five stars for lightfastness, meaning good or very good lightfastness. While generally considered less of a concern for toxicity, Monona Rossol's work has a section on health problems from titanium, tin, and zinc pigments in the Artist's Guide to Health and Safety. Her most recent research can be found through her site. She mentions there may be impurities from the titanium rutile.
