Naphthol Red DK

PR5

Alternate Names

Naphthol ITR

Permanent Red

Permanent Carmine

Napthol Carmine FB

Pigment Description

Naphthol Red DK. (One of several Napthol reds). Moderate to inadequate lightfastness. We were surprised to see this color found in a currently available Cadmium Red Imitation hue by a major art supplier, and they listed good lightfastness. Perhaps they found a better source for the pigment, but it might be worth doing one's own lightfastness tests.

This is another case where Monona Rossol's work about potential serious health issues that could arise, such as methemoglobinemia, so please consult her writing on pigments.

Resources

PR5 pigment data from David G. Myers, The Color of Art Pigment Database, Artiscreation.com

General information about this class of pigments from Handprint,

Stats

Lightfastness

Moderate to Poor

Does not hold lightfastness in tints. Lightfastness may vary depending on differences in the pigment’s manufacture. This pigment has been known to fade to a BWS 5 in tints which is too low for us. Some sources describe appreciable fading in tints after one year in Florida sunlight. Other sources list it as ASTM II (very good) in some media, but we would consider 5’s on the BWS to be too low for archival artwork. Lightfastness may be lower in watercolor.

Transparency

Semi-Transparent

May also be described as Semi-Opaque, sources vary but it seems to be closer to semi-transparent

Toxicity

Lower Concern

Source: artiscreation.com. Like most pigments, avoid the dust and always handle with care just in case.
