Azo Condensation Red

PR144

Alternate Name

Disazo Red

Pigment Description

A fairly deep middle-red which reminds one of a more transparent, slightly less chromatic, and less lightfast version of Cadmium Red Medium or Deep. Schmincke named their watercolor version Transparent Red Deep, and it is just a bit deeper in lightness and has more difference between masstone and wash than their Pyrrole Red, PR254, which is more lightfast. Transparent Red Deep, PR144, could be considered a middle or a cool red, or at least has a note of coolness. We were surprised to see the lightfastness as high as it is. PR144 still looses a bit of lightfastness in tints (Artiscreation lists 8's and 7's on the Blue Wool Scale). Schmincke gives their watercolor version three out of five stars for lightfastness (meaning it is lightfast, but not the highest level of lightfastness). The semi-transparency is somewhat interesting but we would opt for PR179 or even PR254 or PR108, or which are all rated by Schmincke as having higher lightfastness. PR144 is rare in oils.
