Copper and Chrome Spinel
Copper Chromite Black. The pigment in Gamblin's famous Black Spinel- a pigment not often found in oil paints. There are different varieties of this pigment and they vary a bit in undertone. Like PBk26 (another black spinel) it has a blue-black color. PBk28 is near infra-red absorbent and is recommended for opaque paints.
The precautions for working with copper and chrome would apply- see the Artist's Guide to Health and Safety for the health issues associated with Copper and Chrome in pigments. Her updated writings can be found through her site.
This black pigment does not contain carbon, and Gamblin describes their paint as drying matte.

Hazard, Use more caution
Copper and chrome can be hazardous in pigments. Monona Rossol's work contains more information on the hazards associated with both. Contains Chromium III and/or Copper. Monona Rossol also comments in regard to Spinels (which include a number of pigments) that "Their solubility in body fluids has not been studied and it should be assumed that they release metals." More research needs to be done, so there could be some potential unstudied hazards here (as with most pigments). Please consult the proper health and safety experts as we are not toxicologists. Treat all pigments and paints with studio safety protocols.
May be Low/Lean
By weight, Artiscreation lists 13-18 g/100g of oil.
